Vintage Federer Demolishes Del PotroATP World No. 2 Roger Federer produced a stunning display of tennis to demolish Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 at the Australian Open on Tuesday and reach his 19th consecutive Grand Slam championship semi-final. The Swiss, who goes on to play No. 7 seed Andy Roddick in the semi-finals, has not failed to reach the last four of a Grand Slam championship since 2004 Roland Garros - when he lost to Gustavo Kuerten in the third round.Should 13-time Grand Slam champion Federer go on to reach the final, he would match Pete Sampras’ 18 major final appearances and be within one Grand Slam title-match of equaling Ivan Lendl’s all-time record of 19.Federer was in sublime form in Tuesday evening’s 80-minute quarter-final match against fast-rising Juan Martin del Potro – the eighth seed from Argentina. Back to his formidable best, the former World No. 1 broke in the fourth game to open up a 3-1 lead and, from then on, del Potro was to win just two more games.Federer went on to win 13 straight games, having served for the first set at 5-3 – leaving del Potro powerless against his barrage from the back of the court and finesse at the net. In total, the Basel native won 83 points to del Potro’s 36 and fired 38 winners to just nine unforced errors."I'm very happy, of course. Things went much better than I expected," said Federer. "No, I mean, things were great for me. I was really happy the way I came out and played. I kind of felt good from the start. The longer the match went the more he struggled and the better I got. "The difference was big in the end. It was so surprising to have that kind of a score in the quarters of a Slam, especially having so many great players around at this stage of the competition." Afterwards del Potro was full of praise for Federer, saying: “I couldn’t do anything in the match. He played like No. 1 in the world, so that's it. I didn’t have a good day. I played badly, but he did everything very good.”The 27-year-old Federer is bidding to become just the fifth man in history to win four or more Australian Open titles. The right-hander, who triumphed at Melbourne Park in 2004 (d. Safin), 2006 (d. Baghdatis) and 2007 (d. Gonzalez), would join Roy Emerson (6), Andre Agassi (4), Jack Crawford (4) and Ken Rosewall (4), should he succeed once more.Federer takes an impressive 15-2 career lead into his semi-final with Roddick, though it was the American who won their most recent meeting at last year’s ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis event in Miami. Prior to that victory, Federer had recorded 11 straight victories against the big-serving American."We have played many times, which is nice," said Federer, looking ahead. "You go out there and you know what's going to happen on the big points. Just a matter of who's going to play better on the day. I mean, look, seems like he's playing well. That's always obviously dangerous. On top of that, I think he beat me last time we played."I'm excited playing Andy. I'm happy for him. He's doing well here again. I'm excited to play against him and seeing him create an upset in a big tournament. That's what's kind of been missing for him in the big tournaments lately."Tandil native del Potro was contesting his second career Grand Slam championship quarter-final, having dropped just two sets in defeating Mischa Zverev, Florian Mayer, Gilles Muller and Marin Cilic to reach this stage. At 20 years and 131 days, del Potro was the youngest quarter-finalist in Melbourne since Richard Krajicek in 1992.Del Potro made history last season by becoming the first man to win his first four ATP World Tour titles in as many tennis tournaments. Beginning on clay at Stuttgart, the right-hander went on a 23-match winning streak – taking in titles at Stuttgart (d. Gasquet), Kitzbuhel (d. Melzer), Los Angeles (d. Roddick) and Washington (d. Troicki) before reaching his first major quarter-final at the US Open (l. to Murray). He had opened the 2009 ATP World Tour season in similar form, winning his fifth ATP World Tour title at Auckland (d.
